Beethoven’s Symphony No 9 (June 2013)

May 11, 2013 By sean o'connor

rte_nsoOn Saturday 15th June 2013, Bray Choral Society and Wicklow Choral Society (both choirs directed by Frank Kelly) will perform Beethoven’s Symphony No 9 (Choral) with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in Shoreline Leisure Centre, Greystones.

Beethoven’s Choral Symphony is one of the most uplifting works of the entire orchestral and choral repertoire. The famous Ode to Joy in the final movement is a triumph of joy and optimism. The symphony is a very large undertaking and as such is rarely performed. It requires a symphony orchestra of about 70 players, a large choir and four top vocal soloists. This project is on a unique scale and promises to be a memorable performance.

Performing also will be major Irish and International soloists including Miriam Murphy (soprano), Imelda Drumm (mezzo) and Manfred Hemm (bass).

This project is supported by The Arts Council and Wicklow County Arts Office and produced by Wide Open Music – led by conductor Fergus Sheil.

Haydn’s Creation (Apr 2013)

May 11, 2013 By sean o'connor

Our most recent event was the performance of Haydn’s Creation at the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer, Bray, Co. Wicklow on April 27th 8pm.

Tenor, Ross Scanlon was  one of the soloists on the night. Ross started singing whilst a pupil at St. Kilian’s, where Bray Choral Society Music Director Frank Kelly teaches.

Anna Devin, also performed on the night, a member of the choir herself, and has since gone on to sing at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and Glyndebourne.

A third soloist, Jeffrey Ledwidge, joined them to form a trio of wonderful singers with international reputations. The Creation is an oratorio written between 1796 and 1798 by Joseph Haydn, and considered by many to be his masterpiece.
